Allow about 1 hour and 30 minutes for this 1.2 mile round-trip walk to the Nez Perce Camp. Follow the trail markers with the printed guide for a historical account of the Battle of the Big Hole. The battle began at the Nez Perce Camp when soldiers surprised the sleeping Nez Perce. Like other tribal places in Idaho, Washington and Oregon, the area is Sacred Ground. It symbolizes the strength and spirit of the Nez Perce and serves as a reminder of their heavy losses in their struggle for freedom.
